History of Education in India

The history of education in India is very rich and interesting. One can trace the ancient India education to the 3rd century BC. Research shows that in the ancient days, sages and scholars imparted education orally, but after the development of letters, it took the form of writing. Palm leaves and barks of trees were used for education, and this in turn helped spread the written literature. Temples and community centers often took the role of schools.

When Buddhism spread in India, education became available to everyone and this led to the establishment of some world famous educational institutions Nalanda, Vikramshila and Takshashila. These educational institutes in fact arose from the monasteries. History has taken special care to give Nalanda University, which flourished from the fifth to 13th century AD, full credit for its excellence. This university had around 10,000 resident students and teachers on its roll at one time. These students included Chinese, Sri Lankan, Korean and other international scholars.

It was in the 11th century that the Muslims established elementary and secondary schools. This led to the forming of few universities too at cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Allahabad. Medieval period saw excellent interaction between Indian and Islamic traditions in all fields of knowledge like theology, religion, philosophy, fine arts, painting, architecture, mathematics, medicine and astronomy.

Later, when the British arrived in India, English education came into being with the help of the European missionaries. Since then, Western education has made steady advances in the country. With hundreds of universities and thousands of colleges affiliated to them, in fact scores of colleges in every discipline, India has positioned itself comfortably as a country that provides quality higher education to its people in specific and to the world in general.

Cyber Crooks Go "Phishing"

Tuesday, February 22, 2011
0 comments
"Phishing," the latest craze among online evil-doers, hasnothing to do with sitting at the end of a dock on a sunnyafternoon dangling a worm to entice hungry catfish. But, if you take their bait, this new breed of online con
artist will hook you, reel you in, and take you for everydollar you have... or worse."Phishing" describes a combination of techniques used bycyber crooks to bait people into giving up sensitivepersonal data such as credit card numbers, social securitynumbers, bank account numbers, dates of birth and more.Their techniques work so well that, according toFraudWatchInternational.com, "phishing" rates as thefastest growing scam on the Internet. Here's the basic pattern for a "phishing" scam...You receive a very official email that appears to originatefrom a legitimate source, such as a bank, eBay, PayPal,a major retailer, or some other well known entity. In the email it tells you that something bad is about to happen unless you act quickly.Typically it tells you that your account is about to get closed, that someone appears to have stolen your identity,  or even that someone opened a fraudulent account using your  name. In order to help straighten everything out, you need to
click a link in the email and provide some basic account information so they can verify your identity and then give you additional details so you can help get everything cleared up.

Once you give up your information... it's all over but thecrying! After getting your information, these cyber-bandits can empty your bank accounts, deplete your PayPal accounts, run up your credit card balances, open new credit accounts,  assume your identity and much worse.  An especially disturbing new variation of this scam specifically targets online business owners and affiliate  marketers.  In this con, the scammer's email informs you that they've just sent $1,219.43 (or a similar big but believable  amount) in affiliate commissions to you via PayPal.  They need you to log into your PayPal account to verify  receipt of the money and then email them back to confirm  you got it.  Since you're so excited at the possibility of an unexpected pay day, you click the link to go to PayPal, log in, and  BANG! They have your PayPal login information and can empty  your account.

This new "phishing" style scam works extremely well for 2 basic reasons.  First, by exploiting your sense of urgency created by fear or greed, crooks get you to click the link and give them  your information without thinking.

Second, the scammers use a variety of cloaking and spoofing techniques to make their emails and websites appear totally  legitimate, making it extremely hard to spot a fake website,  especially when they've first whipped you into an emotional  frenzy.  The good news, however, is that you can protect yourself relatively easily against this type of cyber-crime withbasic software and common sense.

Most of these scams get delivered to you via Spam (unsolicited email), so a good spam blocker will cut down
on many of them even making it to your inbox. If you receive an email that looks legitimate and you want
to respond, Stop - Wait - Think!

Verify all phone numbers with a physical phone book or online phone directory like www.Verizon.com or www.ATT.com/directory/ before calling.Look for spelling and grammatical errors that make it look like someone who doesn't speak English or your native  language very well wrote it.  Never click the link provided in the email, but go directly to the website by typing in the main address of the site  yourself (example: www.paypal.com or www.ebay.com).

Forward the email to the main email address of the website (example: support@paypal.com) or call the customer service  number on the main website you typed in yourself and ask if   it is in fact legitimate.  Above all remember this:

Your bank, credit card company, PayPal, eBay and anyone else you deal with online already knows your account  number, username, password or any other account specificinformation.

They don't need to email you for ANY reason to ask you to confirm your information -- so NEVER respond to email  requests for your account or personal details.

Do You Have An Evil Twin?

Wednesday, February 16, 2011
0 comments

What you don't know can hurt you. Next time you connect to one of them, be very observant you're connecting to a legitimate one and not an evil twin.

What is an evil twin?
They are fake Internet gateways posing as a legitimate wifi hotspots. Supposing you visit the local Internet cafe who has a paid hotspot. You boot up your notebook computer, your wifi connection software seeks out available networks and gives you an option of two (maybe more) networks you can get online with. One of them is from the Internet cafe, but wait. You see one that says "Free Wifi courtesy of Wifi Hotspots Nation" or whatever. Everyone loves a deal, who do you get on with? If you chose the one from Wifi Hotspots Nation, then you may have connected to the Internet on the Evil Twin's network. Note Wifi Hotspots Nation is a fictitious name I created but that is the irony. An evil twin usually operates using a fictitious or deceptive name that's always changing. Since there is no authority governing the names of wifi hotspots, there is nowhere you go to check up on their legitimacy.

Wifi hotspots networks are like doors. In one place (hotspot) you can have many doors. Through one door, you can enter a solid brick room and do what you like since no one is watching you. Through another, you enter into a room with a two-way mirror where someone is watching and recording your activity quietly without you knowing. Both doors are marked in a way you think you're going to the same place but in reality you're not. One of them is really an evil twin; A wolf in sheep's clothing.

Enough about doors and sheep, what does this mean to you? I think you're smart enough to figure it out by now. By connecting to the evil twin, it's easy for the people running it to capture any information you're entering onto websites or even snoop around in your computer and private files. And while they're there, why not drop some kind of malicious software that'll run in the background you'll never even know was there. Who knows that they do.

Aren't these fake wifi hotspots easy to detect?
If you're the owner of the legitimate wifi hotspot, you can tell which network belongs to you or not but not to the average user because they aren't visible and it's very easy to setup wifi hotspots. You and I can do it. There are no alerts and sadly, often the people who work at these hotspots aren't knowledgeable enough to warn you either. The person sitting next to you whom you think is doing work online could be operating an evil twin, or they could be one of those duped by one.

3 Better Ways To Search Online

Nothing creates a more frustrating online experience than pulling up your favorite search engine to find something simple and coming away empty handed after an hour of searching. Search engines - those sites that allegedly help you find what you want online - can cause no end of grief if you don't know some simple tricks that will vastly improve your
search results.

Suppose you wanted to find information regarding 1954 Ford truck parts. Most people would search this subject by going
to their favorite search engine and typing in 1954 Ford truck parts. The search engine would hopefully return results for sites that matched those keywords.

However, search engines usually also return results including sites containing only some of the words in your search. So in this example you would also get sites not only about 1954 Ford truck parts, but on 1954 Fords, Ford trucks, truck parts, and trucks.

Virtually everyone knows the frustration of typing keywords (the topic of your search) into a search engine, clicking the search button, and then facing the prospect of sorting through a million pages (literally) to find what you want. For everyone experiencing search engine frustration, these suggestions should quickly improve your results.

Tip 1 - To aid you in searching more efficiently, most search engines allow surfers to perform "Boolean" searches.

This feature narrows the results to only those websites containing all the words specified, but not necessarily in
the exact order.

Those searching for 1954 Ford truck parts would enter 1954 AND Ford AND truck AND parts into the search box to find
sites containing all of those words.

Tip 2 - Using quotation marks around keyword sets yields even more specific results.

"1954 Ford truck parts" should produce only those websites containing this exact phrase somewhere in the website.

Tip 3 - The more specific you get right up front, the better.

If you want to look for antique car parts for your 1954 Ford truck, start your search with "1954 Ford truck parts"
and work from there.

Don't start with "1954 Ford" because you'll probably just waste time sorting through everything from cars to magazines to collector clubs. It would also help if you searched by the model and any other specific information.

If refining your searches doesn't get you where you want to go, several programs exist to help you search more quickly
and effectively. Copernic (www.copernic.com) examines multiple search engines then compares each engine's results against the rest to determine the best sites.

The program then ranks the resulting sites and displays them for the user. Copernic's free version allows users unlimited searches for websites.

Web Ferret (www.ferretsoft.com) also offers a free program that queries multiple search engines and displays the
ranked results in the user's web browser for easy surfing.

With the addition of millions of web pages every week, continuously honing your search skills represents one of
the smartest investments of time and energy any serious web
surfer can make.
